Dr. Patricio Mendez was Mike's undergraduate research advisor at Mines prior to Ryan. They had worked on the materials science surrounding precision welding. Almost 20 years ago, Patricio moved to Edmonton with his family. He is now Weldco/Industry Chair in Welding and Joining and Director, Canadian Center for Welding and Joining for the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. We stopped by for a visit - to catch up and see his labs.

Meeting wih Patricio - nice tour of the lab, including their new handheld laser welder!
After the tour, we walked across campus to meet up with his wife for dinner. This is a pileated woodpecker:
