Good morning from the Crinkle Paper Empire! Lots of snow outside, so today is definitely a paper day.

All gone! We had candy for 60 kids and it was gone by 6:50 pm. I stayed by the door so no one rang the doorbell. Ziggy was happy. She doesn't like the doorbell ringing.

Happy Halloween! We are all ready for trick or treaters. Ziggy made sure I finished the decorations yesterday from a warmer spot in the garage (was 33 deg / 1C). Last year, we had 56 trick or treaters. We'll see what happens this year!

Happy Caturday! Still hot and dry here. No rain for weeks, high temperatures around 80 degrees (27 C) and lows near 60 degrees (15.5 C). We are 1900 miles (3060 km) from where the hurricanes were and 1000 miles (1600 km) from the West Coast. The forecast says it should rain Friday. We haven't had any rain in about 3 weeks and our county is still under a stage 1 fire ban because everything is so dry. ?

White and yellow yarrow. I love my yarrow plants. They are so hardy and produce tons of flowers for months!

Torch lilly - first bloom! This lilly was planted last year. Happy to see it bloom this year!

New hydrangea plant. This is the first time I am trying fall planting for anything other than trees and bulbs. Local nurseries recommended it because fall has been mild and spring has been weird in recent years.

Little snores... Catdad will be in his chair forever

Friday had a tearful start. It turned out that Baby 4 was not reticent, but stuck. And not like quickly undo some string and release him kind of stuck. The wing had not formed properly because it had been mired in red clay. He got free by breaking it off. A Wildlife Rehab Specialist said one way or another he was never going to fly and euthanasia was the best option since the family of 4 was still devoting a lot of energy into taking care of him instead of getting ready to migrate. I had to go to work for a schedule meeting, so Catdad took the baby in for "the appointment" with our Vet. RIP baby 13. Over the past 2 years, 13 babies have been born in the nest, 11 have flown off to live their barn swallow lives.

One of the siblings came to join bird #3 on the baby gate. They were not successful at convincing bird #4 to join them. So, we still have one very VERY stubborn baby bird in the nest. Swipe to see. He will be ok - mother swallows continue feeding all the babies for 7 days after they leave the nest.

Sleepy Sunday

I saw a very exasperated Mama Swallow sitting on the baby gate last night. Not making her usual sounds, just sitting there. "Stubborn, huh?" She looked at me, tilted her head. "Maybe they'll fly tomorrow." She looked at me and then flew to the neighbors' porch for the night. The nest is too full for her to spend the night with the baby birds. She was busy feeding them breakfast this morning while Ziggy and I were hanging out in the designated safety zone on the lawn.

Friday night chill on the lower deck. It's less smoky now, but that is because the wind picked up, which makes it harder for the firefighters. The wildfire in our area is now 480 acres and 10% contained.

The baby birds aren't leaving the nest...even though they are out of room. Our rabbit was back this morning.

Supervising HOA landscaping. I call these the "tragic trees". Someday, these trees will obliterate the lovely view from our decks. Lennar says "no one is guaranteed a view" and "people like trees" in defense of planting what will be 60-foot tall trees in front of our deck. I call them the tragic trees because, long after I no longer live here, a future owner is going to end up fighting to have them taken down. Why plant something that can live a hundred years in a place where it won't be allowed to live? Thus, they are The Tragic Trees. Planted thoughtlessly as unwanted ornaments and destined to die young.

The meows were coming from the basement. Ziggy discovered where I put the components of the baby bird ramp after I washed them.

Still my favorite Throw back to the time @jasmineheartnose recognized Ziggy as part of The Avengers! It's true - she doesn't nap in the basement; that is where her secret launch base is! These extra curricular activities certainly explain why she does so much napping in the office.

Big news! Well, actually little tweeting flappy news. Swipe to see - 2 of the 4 baby swallows left the nest! Thanks to my hubby for the pictures of the mom feeding one of them on the neighbor's roof. Two are resistant. The mama bird tried talking to them. The papa bird tried talking to them. They are not in the mood to leave the nest. Maybe in a day or two.
