New Castle Island
just off of Vancouver Island, Canada: July 10, 2003

Looking at Newcastle Island from the dock and from the ferry:

Things were looking up once we go to Newcastle Island. Here's the entry to the island and the view of Vancouver Island from the dock.

The first thing that caught our attention was the collection of kids at the side of the dock. It turned out they were busy watching tiny crabs. Here's Mike heading to see what the fuss was about:

A picture Mike took of a crab: (they were pretty uncooperative about getting their pictures taken)

We started walking along a trail that followed the island's coastline.

Finally, we found the big trees we had hoped to see on Vancouver Island.

The path forked at the back of the island, so in the interest of time, we opted to take the one that cut through its center. It was a great day for walking, and we caught the ferry back to Vancouver Island upon our return to the dock. On Vancouver Island, we had a nice dinner at a restaurant on the dock. The waitress called a taxi for us after dinner, and we were soon on our way back to Vancouver.
