It was a rainy Sunday in southern Japan - but our itinerary was full! The research group from Kyushu University picked us
up in the morning to go sightseeing! The first stop was the Daifu Tenmangu Shrine. Here is the street we walked down to get to the shrine:
Mike with his umbrella:
Now entering the outer gardens!
The coolest moss:
The research group showed us how to properly do the traditional hand washing before entering the shrine.
Mike and Dan:
I love this dude!
Inside the shrine...
It's me!
Mike!
Group picture! Kneeling in the front, Hiroyuki Oda from Kyushu University and Dan. From left the right, Yuji Okuyama from Kyushu University,
Ann from Kyushu University, Ryan O'Hare (Mike's advisor from the Colorado School of Mines), Ryan's wife, Lisa Wong, Mike and I,
Hiroshige Matsumoto from Kyushu University, and Jianhua Tong from Mines.
Same group, adding another student from Kyushu University (someone offered to take a picture for us)
Off to the iris garden!
This boulder is actually part of an art installation - remember the Simpsons episode when Homer thought Bart had been turned into a box at the box factory?
The research group had assumed we wouldn't be interested in the shrine's history museum - what? Of course we were!
No pictures in the museum, so this is what you get. It was really cool, with lots of old artifacts.
Leaving the shrine...
Lunch time!
Next, we drove to a restaurant where Anna used to work. They have a separate structure where you can do your own barbecuing. The research
group made us lunch! It was just amazing.
Lisa and Dan were paying attention!
Mike and Jianhua:
Ryan O'Hare. The bundle next to him is Lisa. (the wind picked up as a storm approached)
One more stop -the Shiraito Waterfall. The rain was pouring down on us, but it was a beautiful spot nonetheless!
