here's what the kitchen looks like now. Mike ripped out the soffit after he got tired of dealing with all the nails.

here's a picture Mike got of Chloe playing in the empty kitchen drawers earlier this week

Will and Hannah's Bday Party 27Jun2010: Singing "Happy Birthday" to Hannah
Jul 24, 2010 1:16:12 pm
Here's what Mike has been busy on - getting the former kitchen cabinets installed in his workshop!
Step 1 was to create a pedastal for the cabinets so
the counters can be at what I call "Mike height".
Later, he is going to borrow his dad's truck to go get pre-fab laminate counters from Lowe's.
an elephant and a palm tree in a snow storm. (well, maybe only a couple inches of snow - but the caption sounded good)
writing out cards - Chloe is fascinated by the ones that sing,
but Scooby Doo's jingle bells got quite a reaction. "There is no need to get violent," I told her. She retreated to her blanket.

so nice to have a few hours to myself. some help has finally arrived for our poor bedraggled team at work. :>)
I am doing some baking since I have eggs leftover from Thanksgiving and need to find something to do with them.
(shhh..that might just always be my excuse for baking. brownies and gingerbread headed to work tomorrow)

Nov 26, 2010 9:57:44 pm
Thanksgiving went very well - great food (thanks Nancy, Gwenn and Terry!) and a very nice visit with my fam. Tonight, let the Black Friday festivities begin!
Headed to Toys R Us with Rannae....
Nov 25, 2010 8:40:09 pm
about to start making low sodium turkey chili for my bro. no cans, no mixes because that stuff has too much salt for his medical diet....
that means I have a lot of chopping ahead of me :>o peppers, tomatoes and onion - oh my! hands hurt just thinking about it, but he's worth the trouble. :>)
Nov 21, 2010 9:48:24 am
We enjoyed Jarl's dim sum bday party :>) , and now we're back to pre-visitor cleaning.
Mike is outside washing windows. (His little fuzzy helper is watching him from inside) I am almost done cleaning up from the turkey I made yesterday
and will soon be moving the cleaning parade to the basement guest bedroom/bathroom.
Nov 20, 2010 2:01:06 pm
happy day off to me! After 3 60+ hour weeks in a row, it's great to be home. I'm playing catch up on laundry and cleaning before my fam comes to stay with us for Thanksgiving. :>)
Nov 19, 2010 11:10:51 am
working too much and now doing a poor job of fighting off a bug. hugs from my hubby and singing Flogging Molly are getting me through.
There's one song in particular -
"Factory Girls" from "Within a Mile from Home"...
"come day, go day. wish in my heart it was Sunday. drinking buttermilk all the week, and whiskey on a Sunday". Ironically, the song cheers me up but I'm in no shape this Sunday to drink whiskey. ;>)
Nov 14, 2010 10:00:54 pmThere was a new law that said all credit card terms needed to be easier to read. I think this company is being passive aggressive...this is all one sentence:
"Your Minimum Payment Due is equal to your Minimum Payment plus the Special Repayment Factor for any Promotional Credit Plans with a special repayment factor plus any debt cancellation fees or credit insurance premiums
Nov 12, 2010 8:04:36 pmMy cat is grumpy and grumbly and curled up in the smallest ball she can make...she must know we are about to get our first real taste of winter weather.
Looking forward to taking the first snow pictures of the season!
Nov 10, 2010 9:30:35 pmIt's a cooking kind of day - I already have a few meals in the freezer and plan to prep for another very busy week by making sauce and a pot roast.
Nov 07, 2010 11:21:31 amIt's a beautiful day in Golden - 69 degrees with sunny cloudless skies.
Mike is working on an equipment design for his lab setup and I am catching up on all the things I didn't get done this week (worked too much).
Leaf cleanup in the front yard is done and the roomba is busy vacuuming. He is under close surveillance by the very cat he is trying to clean up after....It's weird how some things stick with you. finally updating the web site after going sooo long without posting pictures. I was surprised to find I have brain cells dedicatd to remembering what the ascii code " " is."The puppet should melt, too" We enjoyed watching the rally to restore sanity and/or fearbeen having a great week and am now looking forward to the nice weather predicted for this weekend. I would really like to get back to the north patio project before it gets too cold to work outside. But I am suspicious of the forecast - nice weather on Halloween in Colorado? that's too unusual. snow storm must be about to spring on us ;>)The good news from today is that Mike's thesis committee accepted his thesis proposal. They feel it is a little ambitious, but it's definitely work that could get his a PhD in a couple of years. So, he's on his way!Mike and I saw a band called The Legendary Shack Shakers last night - hilarious show! Rarely have I seen people with such energy - particularly that late at night on a Sunday. so glad we got to see them! We also were introduced to 3 other good bands, for whom we picked up CDs.got a lot done on the north patio project this morning and took a truckload of dirt to Annette. A little puttering, phone calls to family, and I have a very happy cat who is sleeping on a pile of laundry. What Broncos? (we turned the game off pretty close to after it started.) Mike finished the slides for his presentation Tues and is now playing Borderlands. It's a beautiful day in Golden - just about go degrees and mostly sunny. I have some soup cooking on the stove (chicken with green chilis) and the Rav 4 is getting a new windshield right now (driving I-70 every day is tough on a windshield...the current one sparkles in the sunlight from all the rock pits).for all the zombie fans out there - check this out! :>)
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/dap_10153_12605_DAP_Zombian?origin=zeta*whew* taking a quick break before finishing up. We've been busy all weekend, but actually got a ton done. Mike is downstairs watching the game (Go Broncos!) and doing a super job cleaning the basement up. I am jsut about done with the laundry, cat litter changing, cleaning, budget and bill paying circuit.seems incongruent to be running around in shorts getting ready for icy weather, but that's what we love about Colorado. The yard is now all ready for cold weather next week - hammock and statues put away (including Super Toad, who is looking out the shed window), Mike helped me drain water from the sprinkler system. Thanks also to my hubby for moving Mr. Fox. That fox may look small and lithe, but he's solid stone. My hubby is happy tonight. He thinks he finished the theoretical work needed to describe the ionic transport system he's been working on for the past couple of years. This means he is ready to put his proposal together for his thesis project and do his qualifier on October 25th. :>)tonight I am starting a long overdue project - more overdue than getting the web site up to date. call it inspiration, call it frustration, I'm not sure. I'm just hoping to eventually call it finished. :>)When I first heard about the mine collapse in Chili, I figured the miners were as good as gone. I am so happy to be wrong! amazed tonight that they have begun successfully extracting them *fingers crossed* http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lt_chile_mine_collapseexperimenting to see if I can freeze apples the same way I froze the peaches - that would at least buy me some time to figure out what I want to do with my box of apples.great dinner at Sherpa House with Diana, Shawn and Malia. Thanks for joining us!busy week at work followed up by a busy weekend - all good stuff! Yesterday, Mike helped me get things cleaned up for dinner - had a very nice dinner with the Loye's and his parents, followed by the draft of Nuggets Season tickets (Sanders and Loye's have been sharing season tickets for many years). Today, I am focusin on some accounting and buying some work clothes...followed by dinner with friends tonight! :>)I know my hubby is going to read this and say "I tried to show you that feature <n> years ago, and you said..." I always reserve the right to change my mind and admit I was wrong <n> years later, when I have less free time. I was despairing over trying to get a few hundred pictures from our Moab trip onto our website when I found the Photoshop batch processing feature. excellent!! I hope to get them posted this week.feeling much better and am ready for a fresh week at work. Spent a little time digging in the yard today - what a beautiful day! My hubby has not been feeling better - thanks to Mariah's post about allegies, he checked pollen.com and found that yes, 3 of his heavy hitters are in the air right now. windows are closed, hoping filtered air helps him feel better.cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. After the whole household has been sick, it is time to break out the bleach. (yes, Chloe got sick, too. Luckily, she chose Mike as her tissue instead of me)stars, crickets, the hushed sounds of Highway 93 in the distance - it's great to be home in Golden! We had a great trip to NY - was so happy to see my great aunt doing well. If in my 80's after a stroke and cancer surgery, the worst residual is that I have to walk with a cane, I will count myself very lucky.Happy end of summer! We're moving into one of my favorite times of year when the weather is delightfully cool but not too cold, the last of the summer's flowers are blooming, and there is a noticeable lack of bugs. (never mind the freakish high of 94 deg in Denver today - it's nice and cool tonight)my hubby finds that yes, droid does :>)sorry to see my parents are leaving early to go home to Florida (Wed AM), but I understand 4 weeks is a long time - they are anxious to get back to their normal life, disturbed by the cat getting sick, and pretty tired of the noisy neighbors a floor below them. They'll be over tomorrow night to say good-bye 'til Thanksgivinghome from work - things went well today. figured I would check the online news before I made burritos for dinner and found this amazing story.....wow! now that is 21st century technology.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100912/hl_afp/sciencebiotechrobotshealthskinI had high hopes when I left work and didn't see smoke everywhere - jsut an illusion. The storm that rolled through temporarily removed the smoke but the news says it may be 10 days before they have some control over the fire. I am thankful everyone I know seems to be ok and that the evacuations have been effective, but sad for the 130+ homes that have been lost thus far.Chloe is absolutely delighted to be the only pet in the household again (no offense, Jazz)...although in her most quiet private moments, she almost gets this look like she wonders where that dog she was busy tormenting went. She was getting pretty bold by this morning in the torment-the-dog project. So far, I am keeping the peace. We are dogsitting for a couple of days. My parents' dog, Jazz, is being very very good but I can't convince Chloe she means her no harm. They're doing ok, and Chloe has been able to relax her watch over the dog enough to catch a couple of short naps. Mike's working in the lab he runs at school - general cleanup and getting ready for a new semester. It's the start of a nice quiet weekend here. The Eos (Mike's car) is getting a 2nd bday pressent from Mike - he already gave it a bath and now is doing waxing and detailing.got back yesterday from a great trip with my parents to Moab. pictures and stories to come. many thanks to Rannae and Rob for watching Jazz (parent's dog)...the girls must have kept her busy. I hear she slept in today. :>)had a nice dinner with my parents last night - it is great having them in town for a month. looking forward to getting together with Jarl, Christy and Danny tonight!poor little critter says "thank you for taking me out of the suitcase". I'd say "what was she thinking" but the obvious answer is she wasn't....
http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_15913193?source=rssThe Mines ceramic center conference that Mike was the planning chair for went very well today - and my parents got to see him present! They said he was the best they saw (survey results may be slightly biased *grin* but I'm sure he did great!)getting ready for having company this evening, and part of that prep is making some new peach cobbler. I always get requests for the recipe, so I figured I would post it pre-emptively. See "Notes" page.I bought a case of Colorado peaches from the Rotary Club and decided to try using a technique I learned last year for freezing them - peel them like carrots, cut them up, sprinkle some sugar on them and lay the slices on a baking pan in the freezer for a few hours. They look great! and they didn't all stick together when I bagged them. I see more peach freez in the near future...I need to do at least a dozen more.visit with my bro and his girlfriend went extremely well. They have started their drive back to San Diego. Activities included dinner and a nice concert at Red Rocks last night - the weather was perfect! Today's my mom's bday and we had a very nice breakfast with my parents, Mike's parents, my bro and Kim.busy getting things cleaned and cooked before my fam gets here tomorrow afternoon. I didn't finish all I hoped to, but I think I hit the basics. and I acquired a new praying mantis! He found me while I was dropping off recycleables and he just wouldn't leave, so I gave in and took him home to a densely vegetated area with lots of bugs. Not sure what a 4-inch long praying mantis eats, but I'm sure he'll find it there.getting ready for visitors to arrive this week as well as to send my hubby off to Santa Barbara for a few days (he's going to a conference for his thesis work)ome pretty good pictures of last night's meteor shower: http://www.flickr.com/photos/yahooeditorspicks/galleries/72157624705208110/ended the day nicely - drinking some wine with my hubby while sitting out on our patio, watching the meteor shower. We saw some really big bright ones. :>)Mike is downstairs being productive in his workshop and I am sitting in the study being lazy. hmmm... I'll figure out something to keep me busy. Well, besides sitting with the cat. The air compressor and saw have her rattled.adn then there was music in the workshop. :>) Mike had an old Onkyo tuner in the basement and we bought some speakers for it at Best Buy today - sounds good!enjoyed seeing the belated 4th of July fireworks in Golden this evening with my hubby, his parents, Rannae, Rob and the girls. It was the perfect evening for it - pleasant temperature, starry skies with a few whisps of clouds. I was surprised that our nieces did so well with all the noise. We all laughed when the 2 yr old complained that she couldn't sleep due to the noise. :>)Normally, Chloe is an absolute heathen at the vet - shredding his arms and making such awful sounds that patrons in the lobby are unnerved. Our vet now makes house calls! He came, she was her normal sweet self, was weighed and got 3 (!) shots. No terrible sounds, no blood. She was even nice to him afterward. If you're in the area and have pets, feel free to ask Dr. Holloman about a house call. 303-202-1121.Tonight was one of those nights where a quote was rattling in my brain but I couldn't quite get the words right...thank goodness for google. "We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . . with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark — that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."We just got back from Nevada - drove out there for Debbie's mom's memorial. It was a nice memorial - lots of good pictures and stories. It was great to visit with Debbie, her dad, and Michael Quinn. Penny will be missed.I did not provide sufficient supervision for a certain little cat tonight. I heard the yowl of the huntress only to find she had a snake in the laundry room. I put him outside - don't know if he survived the experience. Apparently, he had been in the house for a while - Mike remembers her chasing something around the living room and losing it under the couch. Thank goodness we only have harmless snakes in our yard. What you're about to read may shock and amaze you. ;>) I just don't feel like digging in the yard tonight. Such a shame, since the rain made the ground all soft. The north patio will have to wait for another day.We definitely enjoyed hanging out at the Blues n BBQ festival with Diana! The "n BBQ" piece was pretty light - not too many BBQ vendors there. but good music, good food, good company! We all enjoyed stopping by to see Jarl, Christy and Daniel afterward. Mike is trying to decipher why Daniel always stares at him. My theory is he is watching for Mike to do something cool, like how Chloe follows me when she's bored. Our first overnight babysitting adventure for our nieces was a success! We all enjoyed Circus Cats, as well as playing with bubbles and reading books. Valerie was happy to see her parents around lunch time today and Maddie, well when she saw her parents' car pull up she emitted a disappointed "ooooooh." *huff* Rob - I don't know about a whole week, but we'd be happy to do part of a week in concert with other sitters.had a great time at the aquarium with Mike, his parents, Rannae, Rob and the girls for Rannae's birthday! came home to...um, it's a dry heat. ;>) Need to find something to do that does not include digging in the yard until it cools down.looking forward to taking the day off tomorrow (yes, I worked a whole 1 day this week and I am taking one off)but a whole upcoming generation won't understand the song!
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/12/us/12Y.html?no_interstitialMY brother is back with his old band, Deliverance and they have a cool new video out. see
http://www.revolvermag.com/video/detail/the-deliverance-premiere-dramatic/really really enjoyed the cool weather and will be sad to see it go. Our little cat feels differently - Mike said she spent much of the day sadly flopped on her blanket. It's been a quiet 4th of July here. I've been pretty exhausted all weekend - think I picked up a cold or something. but no guilt - it's a dark and stormy evening here, not really good fireworks or BBQ weather anyhow.well, there's no real error handling and no GUI, but we have a working script! It's a good starting point for Mike's modeling work. Scripts have a nice way of providing some configuration control capability for input files so he will no longer be wondering what he he used to get a certain result. :>) Code always looks so simple once it's done and working....dusting away the mental cobwebs to write some real code after over two years of exclusively working requirements mgmt and project mgmt. I feel like I'm all thumbs right now, but I'll get this scripting plan working for Mike's modeling. just downloaded a new copy of Java....Thanks to everyone who came to Mike's bday party - good times! and now "the vacuum is on dirt patrol"...he can't go rogue, he is under the watchful eye of a catWhere did the bananas go? Safeway and Target were cleaned out. Well, Target was after I took the last 2 tonight.quiet and productive day today. Software verification testing finished early for this week, I took a few hours off this afternoon. Mike and I went out for lunch - I always enjoy seeing my hubby for lunch. I went to Pioneer sand twice this afternoon to get gravel for the patio extension. I brought just over a ton into the back yard and Mike helped spread it around. but it was a hot day! will finish the rest tomorrow.I've always found a nice evening walk to be the perfect way to wrap up a long day. A couple of miles of cool night air to help cast aside the animal fight/flight side of life and just be a sentient being...until almost getting run over by a cop. To do so, he had to roll through a stop sign and clip the turn so much that he was in the wrong lane.Really enjoyed seeing Concrete Blonde at the Arvada Center - and especially enjoyed being there with my hubby, Malia, Shawn, Jarl and Christy. awesome show, the band did a fantastic job. but the catch - in a place in the LA sprawl lost to space and time, I once dedicated "Tomorrow, Wendy" to Aunt Pam. I had braced myself for it live, but cried through the whole song. After all these years, she is still missed....We had a great time with the Father's Day party at our house. Kickball croquet, bubbles, old pictures, cat toys (our nieces have always loved playing with the cat toys) and a fantastic dinner. I gave some of the extra bubbles to our neighbor's grandson, Phillip. He apologized to me for his dog "being so barky"...cute kid :>) pictures coming after the camera battery is charged. Our kitchen smells fantastic! Mike is working on ribs for Father's Day dinner.I took today off as flex time for some long days early this week and long days to come next week. It was a great day to have off! Fantastic weather, had a nice tiem this morning with our little soccer party, and I got a lot of work done in the yard. pictures coming soon. looking forward to a quiet evening with my hubby. We are all set for our soccer breakfast with Jarl and Daniel. Mike helped me come up with an American theme - Bisquick for pancakes, whipped cream with blueberries and strawberries for the red, white and blue...and of course bacon.I really enjoyed the cool, rainy weather this weekend, with the clouds draped over the foothills in Golden. Luckily, it will be around for a few days longer before we once again get scorched with the summer sun. Enjoyed having lots of time with my hubby, including the Rockies baseball game today. Thanks to Fish and Micki for the invitation! Was also great to see Jarl and Daniel yesterday. :>)Mike is sure that Chloe sleeps so much because she spends all her energy growing more fuzz. brushing in progress...perfect timing! I finished loading up the blue truck and wentto Rooney Road (costs $10 to dump the dirt there, but it's better than dealing with craigslist people - one asked if I would separate the sod from the dirt before I brought it over. um, no) As I was unloading the truck, the sky grew dark and creepy looking. I hurried up and drove home - ran inside the front door just as the hail started. quite a stormMike set the roomba running before he left for school. Smart little thing - it won't let me set it for another room if it thinks it needs charging. "I'm afarid I can't let you do that, Kari." ;>) Mike is off for a lunch at school - he's one of the students on a selection committee for the new department head.3 day weekend! Not many plans except digging in the yard. Heard that my great aunt's surgery went ok, more news next week after her follow-up visit.Nothing makes me feel more uncoordinated than a new aerobics tape, er... DVD. Step kick punch step kick twist punch step kick d'oh! <insert random kicks and punches> ok ok step slide step slide step slide arm circle jump kick punch arm circle wait what?<random kicks and punchs plus jumping> and so forth. No web cams allowed in the basement. ;>) I told Mike that I got more of a workout than the people on the screen. There is a robot helping me clean - he seems to be doing a great job! I'm thrilled! He even gets under ythe furniture we didn't think he could fit under. Now, I need the roomba people to create a shower cleaning robot, and a grass trimming robot, and a dandelion pulling robot ;>)It's a beautiful day in the DEnver area - warm like summer, but the heat of the high altitude sun is mitigated by scattered clouds. Mike and I took a ride in his convertible - had lunch at On the Border using a gift certificate from my bday, then stopped at Best Buy to pick up a CD from "The Dead Weather". Jarl - thanks for the recommendation!searching for motivation to get some cleaning done, somehow still fussing with email and stuff online. ;>)just got home from a very nice birthday party at Mike's parents house. I got a new bigger scanner for my bday! look out world - there will be pictures. Well, there are already pictures. I have boxes of them in the basement and they need to find their way to the digital world. Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes! Sorry about my wall. I have "allows friends to write on wall" checked, so I have no idea what's up with it. facebook - go figure ;>)
Anyhow, been having a fantastic day - pictures coming soon.a long week ended in watching "Iron Monkey" with my hubby last night - awesome movie - and now I am starting a 4 day weekend! :>)Folex is my favorite stain remover....and it saved the day again! Mike's pen leaked in his pocket while sitting on our couch - blue ink everywhere. But the Folex helped get it all out. I told him that, judging from the pile of paper towels we used for blotting, it looked like we had murdered a smurf! :>)We are almost at the end of a fantastic weekend - wonderful weather, Mike has been working on the kitchen and I've been working on the gardens. (they were neglected while I was working on the patio) I spoke with my great aunt - she's hanging in there. What is troubling her most about her cancer is all the uncertainty right now. MRI and more dr appts this week, hopefully they will be able to answer her questions.saddened but not surprised to hear confirmation that my great aunt has cancer and will soon be getting surgery. Glad to hear they may have caught it fairly early, and that she is more settled with the news this evening than she was this afternoon. She's had a tough year and a half! (massive stroke, broken hip, and now this)making dinner...got a loving squinty look from the cat, as if to say "Kari, did I ever tell you that you're my favorite person in the whole meatloaf? ...I mean, world"poor cabin fever cat. Chloe and I did go out when I got home, just 10 minutes before it started raining. but it wasn't enough. After dinner, she wanted to try it again....she had a plan. Last summer, she had weathered many storms under the big leafy tree in the back yard. So she dashedacross the patio and hopped up on the wall only to find her plan had one flaw....it's too early in the spring for leaves.spent some time running errands tonight - otherwise known as driving around singing Flogging Molly and loving the spring rain!was that the sound of Gregorian chants coming from my living room? my CD? no....Halo 3. Looks like Mike is taking up a new game for the week.I was happy about the rain today - a good week of spring storms always helps the water supply in our beloved high plains desert. wasn't so thrilled about the prediction for 4 inches of snow...be careful what you wish to not get - instead of snow I now have over 1/2" of thankfully small hail and was that thunder? I have always loved storms and Colorado is definitely an interesting place for them!had a great day! calm before the storm? let's hope not. Everything has been going my way. and now to finish it off with some fresh chocolate chip cookies (well, I have to make them first....mmm, chocolate chip cookie dough)long weekend. The extra pavers from the patio are in the backyard and my Rav4 is back in the garage. Lawn is all cleaned up, and while I was at it, I cleaned up our neighbor's lawn, too. I thought about reporting them to the city again this year versus just taking care of the "nuisance" yard myself...opted for walking the lawn mower over there. Mike also found some weed b gon for me to use. time to relaxirony - I read this Dilbert comic to Mike and told him the Dogbert role in this one fit him perfectly..
http://news.yahoo.com/comics/dilbert#id=/comics/100504/cx_dilbert_umedia/20100405One of the papers my hubby has been working so hard on was accepted for publication in a Materials Science journal. :>)He saved the day! or week, as it were. Email archive and address book have been restored! *whew* Losing my address book was kind of like losing the memory on a phone - you suddenly have this awkward knowlege that you'd been doing everything via speed dial and don't have a current list of numbers anywhere. Sure, there's always the handful you know by heart, but the others...darn Outlook. I have it installed now but can't seem to find all my old email and addresses. Hopefully when Mike gets home, he can help.I have update my patio project album with lots of new pictures, as well as a look back at progress over the past year. Now it's time to get to work!I washed Chloe's favorite blanket today...it needed it. There was a period of great sadness where she just lay on the couch with her head fallen over, staring into space. About 2 hours ago, it came out of the dryer piping hot. She came running over as I put it back on the couch, and hasn't left her blanket since.Am I already old enough to be shrinking? ;>) Bought new sneakers today because my old ones literally fell apart...size 6 1/2. I swear I used to wear a size 7 1/2 20 years ago. I know the companies change the sizing of women's clothing but had no idea they also changed shoe sizes. It's a lovely sunny Friday here in Golden and I took the day off via flex time. No real plans other than waiting for A&A Sprinkler to give our system a good checkout (they do a better job of it than I do). Tomorrow, 1000 little white pavers for the patio will show up. So, today is my quiet down day!I am afraid to check the score on the Nuggets playoff game. I hope Mike and Jarl are at least having a good time.thoughts are a few thousand miles away with my great aunt tonight.busy weekend! We had a very nice get-together with Mike's family on Saturday. Today, I finished moving the sand to the patio area in the back yard...10.8 tons of gravel and 4 tons of sand later, I am ready for the pavers. After 3 months, we finally selected cabinet handles for the kitchen. Mike has been working on installing them whenever he gets tired of watching the Nuggets work hard to lose playoff game #3.In a perhaps too literal translation of "no snakes or nightcrawlers in my hallway", Chloe tried to bring a bird into the living room today. Luckily, I was able to intercept quickly and the bird escaped her grasp unharmed. Please keep in mind she was outside for < 30 seconds when she caught it because I had her let her out to eat some grass while I made dinner.computer crashed this weekend, am now getting settled on a new one plus getting used to the new Windows. Mike has gotten me access to all my files. I can get web mail but do not yet have my email archive back.2.5 tons of gravel and 4 tons of concrete sand delivered this morning for the patio project. :>)get ready for some tulip pictures - while outside with Chloe tonight, I noticed our tulip plants are taller than she is - and the daffodils are even taller! Looks like another week or so until there is a flower explosion on the wall.I took Chloe outside tonight. Her new thing is hunting nightcralwers. (For those who don't know, night crawlers are giant dark worms - so big that they leave lumps in the yard) We think it would be neat for her to catch some. On the other hand, I worry that any she caught would be dragged into the house like the snakes she catches. So far, she has only caught one and she dropped it out of sheer surprise. ;>)date night tonight - we went to the Denver Art Museum's "Uncorked" event. over 30 wines available for samples plus lots of good food. thought it was cute that the lady we know from Applejack Liquor had listed out the prices of each bottle with and without the cliub card savings i the brochure. ;>) the selection was overwhelming, but we found some good things and had a great time!didn't leave work until ~7:45 tonight...but was very happy to come home to find my hubby had made dinner! :>) :>) :>)it turns out there was a desk under all that unread mail! :>) some much needed cleaning going on.and it was only Monday.... long week ahead.busy day today! It was a beautiful sunny 70 deg day. We worked on the patio - rented a tamper and got all the gravel tamped down. Another couple of tons and another run with the tamper should have it at the right level. also helped our neighbors get a stump out - well got enough dug around it and enough roots cut that using a winch won't destroy their garden walls (the tree was living in the middle of terracing)had lots of fun with Diana yesterday while Mike and Jarl were at the Nuggets game. We went to dinner and then to the eDays fireworks at Mines. The fireworks had a new format this year, due to the new artificial grass at the field they used to use for the show.finally made it to Thursday of a long hard week. am hoping for it to be over soon.We have a floating candle set up that Travis and his wife gave us as a housewarming gift several years ago. Now that we have the nice peninsula in the kitchen, I brought it back out - and it worked perfectly! I love how the light reflects in the glass vase and around the room at night. One problem I had not anticipated...turns out the oil is tasty. or so deemed my lip-smacking cat. hmmmmglad I took the day off - if you don't mind chilly (34-36 deg) air and lots of wind, it's a beautiful day! I am working outside on the gardens so they'll be pretty for Sunday's easter egg hunt...saw that our first flower is almost ready to bloom. Chloe, on the other hand, is tucked into her blanket in the living room. Wind and cats don't get along well.Mike noted that I was bopping along tonight while we were getting stuff arranged for the counter installation - of course! I've had a song in my head all day - Jipsy Valentine by The Legendary Shackshakers. Awesome song made better by my hubby dedicating it to me. :>) http://www.cockadoodledont.com/happy my hubby has lost over 15 pounds since he defended his thesis and somehow Tim convinced him to start swimming twice a week. good job, Tim! So far, Mike seems to enjoy it.spring must be here - utility bill was downright reasonable for last month. but if they keep adding fees, they're going to need to reformat their bill to make room for it all. "Demand Side Management Cost"? "Purchase Cap Cost"? $18 basic charge plus $52 in fees and adjustments plus $4 in taxes and fees... laughable. someone is spending way too much time inventing fees.1 more working day this week and then a 3-day weekend off of flex time :>)still trying to get motivated to do some more cleaning. feeling exhausted today, must be allergies or something.must be in a weird mood tonight - Mike is listening to Nine Inch Nails' "With Teeth" while trying to get some work done on his thesis project. I dropped in just to tell him I envisioned an aerobics video from the album. As "The Hand that Feeds" started to play I said "ok, now let's get ready to work!" and he laughed...and went back to writing. I think I'll work on cleaning up the basement now and leave him alone. ;>)snow doesn't last long in a high plains desert. :>) roughly a foot of snow in the driveway this morning but the commute was pretty easy. coming home was easier! Bright sunshine, clear dry roads, me having to drive in the middle lane on I-70 because I wasn't going fast enough for the general population...I've heard from a reputable source that happiness is a blanket warmed up in the dryer. Chloe had been rather upset about the snow, ice and especially the wind. and then I stole her blanket to wash it. terrible. I heard all about it. but when it came back clean and hot from the dryer....complete bliss. :>)cold and icy on the outside, Mike playing Fallout 3 on the inside. I actually missed the sounds of Fallout, especially the AI on the radio. "Hello again America, this is John Henry Eden, your president." :>) http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Enclave_RadioIt was warm and sunny, all the snow melted and the tulips were happy. Next storm moved in - took me 1 1/2 hrs to get home, we decided to skip the concert we had tix for tonight due to road conditions. From inside my toasty house, looks like it was a good decision. :>) March snow brings April flowers....better bring lots! ;>)fun reunion dinner tonight with Jarl, his wife Christy, their son Daniel and Shawn with his wife Maliya. a good time was had by all and dinner worked out well even sans counters. (Counter installation is April 2nd, but I can still cook) was really good to see them all.We got back from our roadtrip late Wed night - we had a wonderful time! It had been far too long since we had seen friends in SoCal. Today, we spent most of the day puttering in the yard since it was such a warm - 60+ deg - sunny day. We have made some progress on the patio I started last fall, also gave all our plant friends a round of fertilizer to take advantage of the incoming snow tonight.hubby saved the day - twice! Luckily for me, he met me at Lowe's to go over the contract for the counter...and saw that they had the wrong color. *whew* maybe get a revised contract tomorrow so we can place the order. and I came home to find he had been deep deep cleaning the bathroom! including taking all the hardware off the shower doors and scrubbing everytthing.what a wild week, and it's only Tuesday! On the plus side, I got the plastic stints out of my nose - the ones from the surgery in Feb. That brand new skin meets air sensation was more painful than the stint-free bliss I had imagined. Nonetheless, the doc says everything still looks great - so it's just a matter of time before I feel brand new.back from the Mines ski trip - had a great time. Friday, we all ate at Beau Jo's in Idaho Springs and then we had a scotch sampling (sponsored by the Sanders) at Mike's advisor's parents "cabin"...it has at least 6 bedrooms and was quite capablet of hosting 16 people. Saturday, we lounged around, had a great conversation with Chloe (the girl, not the cat) and the dinner with spaghetti sauce turned out really well!I had surgery so quickly after Eleanor's funeral that it didn't hit me until now - - it's very weird to have a Sunday afternoon where I'm not calling her to say hi. I keep looking at my to-do list in the study saying to myself "what am I missing?" and then "oh yeah. but I don't get to do that any more"I bought myself a black cauldron today. just kidding...it's a cast iron dutch oven because I needed more production capability. am making spaghetti sauce for the annual ski trip of Mike's research group. I heard they were sad when he told them there was a 20% chance I wouldn't make sauce this yr due to surgery and the kitchen only being 1/2 usable. but I told him it wasn't a problem. 2 batches in the cauldron now.interesting - it's not about gray matter afterall...all about the connections. http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20100227/hl_hsn/scientistsunravelmysteriesofintelligencehad a follow-up appt with my surgeon today and he said everything is healing great. certainly feels a lot better, too. I can almost breath normally. I am not fond of breathing through my mouth - reminds me of a dog our neighbor babysits for his daughter. I forget what kind of little dog she is, but Tinkerbell huffs and grunts while she walks...when I'm outisde in the yard, I always know when Tinkerbell is around.ahhh....nice warm water. Many thanks to my hubby and his dad for installing a new water heater while I was at work - and for less $$ than I had expected! Mike is finishing up something in the kitchen and I told him we both need a break tonight. So much has happened and it's only Tuesday!Well, the joy of having the cabinets installed was metered while I was cleaning up...I know the basement in the dark, and was putting a few things away. My foot felt wet. I reached up and turned on the light. Aw...&%%* looks like we need a new water heater. We were finally able to get it drained with minimal flooding.*whew* Mike and his dad did all the work on the kitchen today, but I am tired...maybe just from watching. (the more logical answer is that I haven't been sleeping all that well this week, but the got tired watching answer is more fun!) The wall cabinets are in minus one we need to reorder. They're going to work on base cabinet installation Monday.new profile pic - kind of a goofy pose but you can see that 3 days after I had surgery on my nose I am not bruised and it's only slightly swollen. incredible. I am so impressed by this surgeon.got 10 miles of gauze out of my nose today - was not really sure where it all came from. but I have felt great all day! I am cleared to go back to work and do normal activities. The ENT said I will be quite congested as this all heals over the next several weeks...The other good news is that, if everything goes well, Mike should be able to start installing the kitchen cabinets this weekend.I woke up about once an hour last night because my fuzzy nurse was worried about me. She kept standing in front of me, paws on my chest, fussing with my head, my mask and gauze for under my nose, and my hair. "Chloe". fuss fuss fuss. "I'm ok," I said as I pushed her away. "Meow" and she was back. fuss fuss. "C'mon I need some sleep" and that usually got me off the hook for about an hour. Poor worried little cat.Surgery girl is watching Mike be super busy! He made me dinner and did the dishes. Now he is back to doing texture in the kitchen. We're still not done with the walls, hoping to finish painting this weekend or shortly thereafter...the whole thing just kind of got derailed with him writing another paper (kitchen is fun, but he still does have a job *grin*), the trip to NY and of course...surgery girl.I've had better days, but this one could have been worse. Had surgery this morning to fix a hole in my nose. am now home...all points considered, not doing too badly. follow-up appt tomorrow, it'll be another week or so before I am healed up enoguh to get the splints out of my nose.texturing is done, the walls should be ready for painting late tonight or tomorrow. Mike and I had a good laugh because we could hear out little cat snoring away down the hall. never had a cat who snored before...and certainly not one where you joke "Well, we had to ask Chloe to sleep in another room....." ;>)The shower is bleachy and some thin mints survived. mmmm I think it's perfect the Girl Scout cookies were available in time for Valentine's Day.yesterday was fun, and still managed to get about 4 hrs of work done. Today, work work! Mike is sanding the spackle in the kitchen and getting ready to do the texturing. I'll paint it once the texture is dry. Just got back from food shopping - lots of housework to get done before I can get back to doing work for this week. yikes!had a Valentine's surprise today - Mike took me to downtown Denver for lunch at the Cheesecake Factory...and then told me not to finish my fries because we were going to split a slice of my favorite cheesecake. was very nice. Then we went to the Dnver Home & Garden show and saw a ormer coworker, Claudia. She is one of the master gardeners at the show and gave us her 2 free VIP tickets. just got home. very happy! For Valentine's Day: Mike and I do everything in 11's...or such is the joke. We started dating on October 11, 1993 and got married on July 11, 1998. We met while I was touring the Colorado School of Mines...which I believe was March 11, 1993. or it is now. I have a picture in the basement with the date.We watched Inglorious Basterds Sat night while I was trying to get some rest...loved it! And Mike is still enjoying the memory of the version of the Bowie song in the movie...from the living room I can hear Mr. Bowie singing "I'm putting out fire..with gasoline" while Mike works on the kitchen. definitely need a copy of the new version of this songpanic and meows...Chloe is not takig well to the floor installation going on today. Mike is home keeping an eye on things. I got a pile o' drugs from the doctor this morning. Should be good to go for the big meeting tomorrow. was ordered by my boss to stay home and not work from home today. not sure what I am going to do with the afternoon.woke up to find myself still running a good fever. After some advil, water and a bite to eat, feeling a little better. but my cheeks! wow! That's pink. reminds me of all the times my Grandma B. would pull me aside and quietly offer to show me how to apply blush. and I would always have to explain that illness and sunburn just turn my cheeks all sorts of pink.2+ degree fever is back - must have been the excitement of watching the Saints win!! I know someone who needs to find her way to a doctor tomorrow morning. And the commercials...meh. My standard was that they had to meet or beat the beer-fetching falcon from a few years ago. (one of my personal faves) The only one to make the ut was the Dorito Samurai...cause it had my hubby in stiches. and that's hard to do.While taking out the remainder of the kichen cabinets, Mike noted that 10 million nails might not be enough - one should also use glue. Seriously, we don't know where the folks who installed those cabinets thought they were going to wander off to....but he's alsmost done.just when I thought I was out....seriously, as of Friday morning I thought that after 3 weeks, I had finally gottrn rid of my cold. I felt great! but it was only because it was regrouping. fever and terrible sore throat all night. :>/ grumble.filed our taxes. refund should arrive on the 19th. yay!and suddenly life gets back to normal in a jiffy. well, "normal". The kitchen project is moving along much faster than anticipated. The cabinets and flooring are being delivered today, flooring installation is on Monday. Mike is working on getting the ceiling patched up so it can get painted before the new floor goes in. No superbowl party this year - looks like we're going to be tearing out the rest of the cabinets.back home now from a quick trip to NY for Eleanor's funeral. :>( Everything went very smoothly, was nice to see everyone. Thasnks to everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support.Eleanor passed away this evening, my parents were by her side. They're both exhausted after this week, I hope they get some rest tonight. My brother and I share the same sentiment - she had a long good life, was loved by many and loved many and we're thankful she suffers no longer. Somewhere out there, I hope she has been reunited with Bill and Sam (their dog)very tired. long week. Things are going very well at work - it's a nice bright point that gives me ssolace. Eleanor is in hospice & was taken off life support yesterday in accordance with her wishes. I don't think it has all hit me quite yet, keeping myself focused on some very important deadlines, expecting to be in NY next week sometime. The folks at work are all being very helpful in getting me some time off.almost done working for the day, been getting phone calls about Eleanor. Well, things are not going well. They were not able to get the feeding tube in because the doctor deemed her too weak for the anaesthetic. She gets some nutrients via an IV but has not actually eaten in over 2 weeks.Mike and Jarl went to the Nuggets game tonight - they won in overtime! yay! I've been puttering. At first, I thought I was too tired to do any cleaning...been exhausted for the past few days, must be fighting something off. but then I saw the dirty dishes and the fingerprints on the fridge.... 2 hours later, things are looking much cleaner. gonna do some vacuuming and call it a night. working tomorrow.took half a day off today after a long week (we didn't get Monday off...and it was a week longer than the hours in it would indicate). am helping Mike remove kitchen cabinets...well "helping". Mike is removing some of the cabinets in the kitchen and I am hovering. Our plan is to get the ceiling painted after he fixes up the holes, etc. ~2 weeks until the new cabinets should be here. time goes by quickly! There is no substitute for being big and strong....of course, I am not referring to myself! *grin* We started working on getting the cabinets out of the kitchen - some one was very very worried they would come off the wall. Holy Nails, Batman! Somewhere in the process, my hubby decided it was going to be fastest to rip out the soffit with his bare hands...and he succeeded. :>oMy parents are back in Florida and Eleanor's condition has stabilized. My dad is headed back to Long Island next week. Eleanor is still on oxygen and her oxygen levels vary.I spoke to Eleanor this morning, Dad said there was a hint of a smile and she opened her eyes briefly. The staff tried to get her off the oxygen yesterday - it worked for about 12 hours but then the oxygen levels in her blood started to drop, so now she is back on it. Well, I am running late for work, so off I go...My bro didn't make it to LI today due to a storm that had pretty much shut down the San Diego airport. He will reschedule his flight soon. My dad said Eleanor was a bit perkier today - her doctor was shocked at her shift in mood since yesterday. She enjoyed listening to my bro on the phone (still can't talk) and had a few more visitors from Bill's family. They are planning to give her a feeding tube Tuesday.update on Eleanor - things got worse over the night. The heparin they were using to clear up blood clots caused internal bleeding. Her pneumonia also worsened. My dad was the power of attorney for her, so the doctor asked him to sign the do-not-recusitate order this morning. The neurologist thinks she may have days or weeks left, but likely not more than that. glad I got to see her for her 90th birthday. My dad got to LI ok. He said Eleanor looks pretty bad - she can't speak or swallow and has a touch of pneumomia. She is in the stroke unit near the nurse's station. She is aware the dad, Vinnie and Vicky are there.grumpy letters work! We had 2 plumbers come out for the sewer...the first charged us $280 just to tell us he thought the line was collapsed and the second charged us just over $300 to get the whole thing cleared out and run the camera down the line to prove things looked good. So, I wrote a grumpy letter to company #1...and a refund for the full amount they charged us just showed up! yay!very very sad to hear Eleanor had a stroke today. She is paralyzed on her left side, can't speak but is aware of her suroundings and recognizes people who have coem to see her. They found some more blood clots that they are going to try to break up chemically. My dad is headed up to Long Island Saturday - Tuesday to check in on her and talk to the doctorsreally enjoyed watching the Simpsons 20th anniversary special (recorded from Sunday) ...and I have this weird notion that I am almost caught up enough at work to start thinking about getting caught up. ;>)The basement is finally officially bleachily clean after the whole sewer episode. And my sinuses are clear for the first time in 2 weeks! I love the smell of bleach in the morning....got some practice with the snowblower this afternoon. I need more practice with the snowblower before we get any big snows....not that I'm asking for snow. but I'm sure the neighbors had a good laugh. I know Mike did. :>)looks like the kitchen remodel is a go. We've got a design that meets all our desirements and a price that has met my requirements. who'd have thunk it? After 6 1/2 days of working, I will be glad to take tomorrow afternoon off to go see the contractor and put down the deposit. :>)very glad the sewer pipe thing is over! Luckily, it was just tree roots... :>)had the water off in the house last night, plumber coming back at 9 today. The problem is more than 55 feet down the pipe...hoping letting the pipe drain over night will make it easier to see what is going on. Mike and I went to a local hotel, had a fun time hanging out in the lounge and watching some Broncos that actually won their game (Fiesta Bowl) :>)plumber appt is between 12 & 2 today. *fingers crossed*ah, the first wine of the new decade...it was a good one, Chateau Labat. and a quick spider tale from the basement....as I came upstairs with the trash bag, Mike took a few stpes back and said "By the time they're big enough that you feel a need to converse with them and ask if they're ready, I want nothing to do with it." :>)2010 has had a rough start. sewer backed up, right now we can't use the water in the house. Luckily, unlike in 2008, I was downstairs when the water started backing up into the basement sink and shower, so we were able to intercept it. /have tried liquid plumber but, like it was in 2008, the blockage is probably way down the line towards the street. will try to get a plumber Saturday.Jan 01, 2010 4:28:53 pmLast updated 23Nov2022
