Ziggy is pretty unsure about "projects day". Mike has been busy figuring out how to run conduit from the basement to the study. I have been working to finish the art project. Frames for a bunch of things we have had in storage are on their way, as is more hardware for hanging stuff. The plan is to move the VR TV and the computer next to it out of the basement office area and into the workout room. After my foot is healed up, I can use that TV for workouts. (unknown injury, unknown cause...next dr appt is on the 5th) Also, moving the TV will create space for the painting Mike bought me for my college graduation. It's called "Sick", and was painted by his former coworker, Sean. I love the painting. Most visitors feel quite differently about it. So, it will go near the basement office. 🤗

My helper and I fixed up the icicle lights after last night's wind storm. Much of the zoo ended up inside, some repairs are needed. Amazingly, only 3 icicles were lost when the wire snapped. I guess I have "spare icicles" now.

Holy canoli! Mike and I were enjoying some puzzle time, but I could hear the winds getting stronger. So, we just took a break to check on things. Good thing I had zip tied the icicles to the tree out front, or they would be in Kansas by now. The wind had taken the back off the brother penguins, the head off the moose, folded over the palm tree, ripped open the frog's leg, and pulled out the stakes for the hippo. Ziggy is unnerved by the sudden appearance of refugees by the front door. Hopefully, the rest will be ok overnight.

It's been so windy! Overall, the zoo has fared well. One restaking and one repair done on a work break this morning. The zoo's magic lies in its zip ties. I told them to hang in there - 2 weeks and lots of wind left in their tour of duty.

Well, we moved into this house 2 years ago, and I am finally ready to start decorating. I finally framed the pictures of Muggins, Braveheart, and Cirrus that were painted for us as a sympathy gift. The northern lights picture is from one of our trips to Alaska. Mike and I created a collage of Ziggy pictures. There are boxes and boxes and boxes of art and art in multiple closets. It's been a tough morning. Ziggy was outsmarted by the rabbit and has been hanging out by the tub since. The rabbit realized that, while Ziggy could get part way under the shed, there are cross supports that she can't get around. So, the entire central space under the shed has room for rabbits but not cats. So, it tested the theory. She stuck her head under the shed, the rabbit ran to the other side of its newly found safe space. She ran around the shed and stuck her head under the other end. The rabbit then ran back across its safe space. Ziggy ran around the shed again and stuck her head underneath. Back and forth, for 15 minutes, until she was exhausted and went inside. To sit by the tub. For 5 hours so far.

Decisions..... Every year, we add an ornament to our tree that represents the year. Usually, it is from somewhere we travelled to, which of course isn't an option this year. So, I bought a picture frame to make this the year of Ziggy. But that means selecting one of the hundreds of pictures I took of her for the frame. I have been narrowing it down to a top 6....

I use a lot of zoom meetings for my consulting work, and I have been laughing that the company's system uses .... well, maybe all the filters?? 2020 zoom and 1998 photo.... Everytime I see myself in the zoom view, it reminds me of this picture taken at a camera shop in Woodland Hills. I was joking with a coworker that someday we will all meet in person and be like, "omg, go back to zoom!"😄

Harvest party! Twice a year, we usually go to our local vineyard for fantastic food and a wine tasting. This year, the wine tasting has come to us! But it will take us a while... The 2019 batch had 16 different wines in it! 🙀 Plus a free thank you wine and our November wine club. Looking forward to dinner tonight!

Behind the scenes at @fuzzybooks12, read to the end to see these pictures differently..... Ziggy went to the vet today. She has been gaining a ton of weight but not eating much, so I figured it was time for the senior cat checkup. Radiography was fine, no cancer, no heart problems, and we will get the blood tests for her endocrine system back on Monday. Ziggy knows she has an instagram account with fans - she literally poses for pictures and chirps at me to get something posted. As a reference to Beaujack Horseman (TV show), we refer to them as the Pickle Pack. Anyhow, she is flopped on the floor looking all sad, and I go back upstairs to get my phone. When I come back downstairs, she is lounging and looking downright happy.....until I get set up and then she literally assumes this pose. As soon as I say "got it", she went back to being happy. She had dinner and went to bed. I am not kidding. Such a ham 😊😸

I awoke to the sound of the bedroom door creaking open, followed by "ker-plunk". I opened my eyes, and staring back at me was a cat who wanted to go play outside. We wondered if she knew about the snow? Or would she not care? .....and the answer was, 27 seconds. 🤗🙀😾

Ziggy's first snow and ice. Even though she is 12, it is clear that our outdoor enrichment activities are her first adventures outside. Today, she was surprised to hear the ash trees jettisoning their leaves and to find the ice on her stump was cold! Run around inside to warm up your paws kind of cold. At least outside time still achieved it's objective of some exercise. ;)

life with cats... Cirrus was being a needy grumblecake, so I thought catnip time might be needed. I retrieved all his toys from the cat condo and covered them in sprinklings of catnip as I arranged them on the living room floor. Cirrus was thrilled! He drifted off to sleep on a pile of catnip covered pom poms. He was sound asleep. Sitting on the couch talking, Mike and I saw one or two times when he actually moved a little. Muggins missed those. He saw his brother sprawled out on the living room floor and was worried. He paced around him, sniffed at him, moved a few toys, lay on the floor next to him, came over to us to express him concerns, and then went back to fussing over Cirrus. Frustrated by our lack of action, he finally leaned over and licked Cirrus' head. Cirrus bolted up with an angry "mrrrr" and shot him a look that said "I'm not dead, you idiot! I was comfortable and you ruined it." He eventually grumbled his way to get a drink of water and head down the hall to go to bed. Muggins followed, apparently happy he had fixed his brother.

Oh my goodness, miss the brother cats 🤗

This is a cat who is tired of appliance repair. Earlier this week, someone came by to fix the ice maker in our refrigerator (under warranty!!) and today a technician from Elkhorn stopped by to resolve gas I was smelling that Xcel energy hadn't been able to figure out. Turns out one of our water heaters is just about dead.... And is starting to leak, which we were unaware of. I hear @[711367696:2048:Tim William] was volun-told he had a favor to repay my hubby on water heater installation help. 😉 Glad to have both items taken care of!

Back in the home office after realizing I should make some headway on my grant reviews for the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Best volunteering gig I have ever had - twice a year, I get to work with an amazing group of people to support Colorado small businesses through a state grant program but also support the state's taxpayers by making sure we have some solid plans to invest in. 🤗

Another great week of Ziggy pictures and videos. We went outside this afternoon and had quite the adventure - including a rare picture of Ziggy walking with her leash. Our baby squirrel has been busy all week carrying stuff from somewhere and burying it in our yard. The squirrel had an oh s*** moment this afternoon when he ran up to Ziggy with his latest haul. Luckily, both parties were equally surprised, so he lived to tell the tale.

Well it's been a hurry up and wait kind of day. We did get the 3rd installment of our Hepatitis vaccines done in preparation for the Peru trip next year. I spent a bit if time trying to rebook our flights between Lima and Cusco. Seems like we have flights but no seats. The third customer service rep I spoke with thought I might be able to get seats if I call back next week. And then I logged in to check a change United made to our reservation to learn the flight to Lima gas been cancelled. More hold time, different music. 😉 Ziggy is ok with it all because her sunbeam is back.

Adventures in landscaping.... A selection has been made for next spring. We had been concerned that the trees selected in the design would be too large to be that close to the fence. So, we will instead plant "skyrocket junipers" next spring. Echter's recommended the end of May.

Lovely evening. Clouds and a breeze, but still no rain and the wildfire smoke continues to be a fog over the mountains. I bought Ziggy a lighter harness to see if she would walk in it, and she did! We spent some time in the side yard, and it was a sensory overload experience for her. So, after a while, I thought she might be done and carried her back to the back yard. Must have done something wrong. ;) She marched from the gate to the back door in a stompy huff... right past the rabbit sitting in the grass next to her. The rabbit looked at me like "man, is she pissed!"

One project we skipped over was getting music in the workout room. Needing music, I was bemoaning not having a stereo system for that room, and then I remembered... I do have an extra system, it just doesn't play CDs. The year was 1989, and I was in PC Richards looking to spend up to my entire savings to find something with actual mid-range. Old blue and I had quite the adventure this afternoon. Drove to the Broomfield Pioneer to get a little more rock, since it is still out of stock in the Golden store. Took the long way back due to all the construction along Dillon Road. There's so much smoke hanging over the foothills. Hope they get the 2 wildfires under control.

At the urgent care vet our regular vet recommended. Poor Ziggle has not been eating much (still eats treats fine, I tested to see what level of "I am not hungry" we were dealing with. ;)) Still congested with lots of eye discharge. Eye is less swollen. And she's being so good....must not be feeling well. She usually makes quite the scene at the vet.

My poor Ziggle. I will call her vet tomorrow. She started taking steroids in March for asthma. We've been trying to ramp her off of them and she's been having trouble. Latest attempt was met by eye trouble - swelling and tearing, so I gave her the usual dose tonight. Hopefully, that helps. It's been a few hours and her eye is still puffy but she's no longer fussing with it. Instead, she is bored with Friday night in the home office.

Rock! Last week, I learned the decorative rock was out of stock because the mill had closed due to Covid. Yesterday, I got a call. "You won't believe what just showed up on the lot, " she said. So, I bought 4 tons. 🤗 It's not enough to finish the entire project, but seemed like a safe number for getting started.

Busy afternoon... Mike ripped out the old steel trim in the front yard, laid out path#2, and is now getting ready to grill dinner. I have been hellbent on moving the rest of the dirt into the front yard (side yard near path #1 has all of it's dirt). I told him that all this 95 degree weather is going to end with a thunderstorm, and I really don't want my pile to wash away. There's a big little like left.....

I am slowly building my heat tolerance back up. Took some PTO today and yesterday to work on the landscaping project, since things are slow at work. The back yard is ready for mulch and decorative rock. We plan to buy the flagstone pavers this fall. The front yard is still in progress. I think path #2 on the other side of the house will go faster, but that may just be the optimism that keeps me going. ;)

The plan is taking shape in the back yard. Mike said "wow - look at you go". Not realizing he was looking outside, I said of my purple and bright baby blue outfit, "yeah, I know, but I guess I will be visible in the dark." He was like "huh?" and I laughed that he meant the progress in the back yard. Then he looked at me and laughed "honey, your inner 80's is showing" . And our house looks all sorts of fancy now with Rob's Dad's car out front.

Last load of dirt and sod went to the dump this morning. (I have today off for the 4th of July) Mike's car got a bath at "Camelot" on the way home from his parents' house. The plan for this afternoon is to pick out a paver pattern so we know how wide the path needs to be. (Minimize need to cut the pavers) . And Ziggy loaf.

2 of 4 mini projects planned for today are done! We finally have an area for Mike's hammock. More to be done in that corner, but the hammock is operational! Next up is removing the rest of the sod and installing the aluminum flashing Mike bought for me yesterday as "rat block" by the patio. Now that we don't have any creatures living under the patio, it's time to seal it up, then install the new path.

And the summer storm came! Luckily, I had a high wind dry run with the tarps yesterday. With the new weight system in place, the piles are still in place. But poor Tiggy! (my car, the Tiguan, not to be confused with my cat, the Zigster) I took a little too long with errands after work, so he was parked outside during Golden's hail storm. Seems no worse for wear.

I will forever love the ocean. When I first moved to Colorado, I informed my husband-to-be that there was nothing in the world like being on a dock, watching the sun set over the ocean and feeling the evening breeze coming off the water. While I still feel that way, I will admit that after over 20 years in Colorado, standing in the stagnant desert heat watching the sun set over the Rocky Mountains is indeed its own version of spectacular. 🤗

I was chatting with someone I know in India who asked why now, what had changed to produce the situation with George Floyd and the protests... And I said, "Nothing has changed. That's the issue." So I told him the story I will tell here .... About 40 years ago in New York, a young black girl was dragged out of her car and beaten to death on a bridge. Many people watched as she cried for help and then died. No one did anything. Her mother ended up on a radio show with a psychologist, and she pleaded to know if there was so much hatred in the world that no one helped her. He said no. The men who dragged her from her car hated her for her race. Everyone else fell under herd mentality. If anyone in the crowd had voiced their objection, people would have helped her. She asked that anyone who hears her daughter's story make a promise to act, to say something. And as I watch the video of the more recent incident, I look back and can't really say anything has changed. I hope to see the day when it does.

My Mets bat! This was from one of the stadium giveaway days when I was a kid, and I thought it was lost forever after Mike and I ended up tearing through closets at the old house looking for it. Officially, technically, I have reached the fence. :) After I clear this up, I need to pull out sod in a neat line along the property line near the spruce tree, map out where the path meets up with the patio in the back yard, and take out some steel trim. *whew* full day of landscaping nearly complete. Making progress with sod removal.... sprinkler installation is in 6 weeks, so there is enough time for site prep if I keep at it. Thanks go to Rob Sanders for stump removal help and helping look for a concrete contractor. The engineer in me just had to do a simulation to validate project requirements... The grass path you see is planned as a concrete path that leads all the way to the back patio. We are planning a garden bridge to go over the most prominent roots from the ash tree. In other news, I am a frizzy mess ;)

Terry (Mike's dad) says that I will be on the Easter bunny's naughty list next year.... This rabbit lives under the juniper bush in the front yard, and I call this picture "guilt trip" (as he eats the grass I will soon be tearing out). Finished sod removal in garden area 1 and have moved on to the east side of the yard. The grass there is so weak that digging it out is going much faster. I got compliments from multiple neighbors on my uneven dirt spots looking good... I guess that falls under 'your lawn is terrible when....' ;)

Garden area 1 of 3 is just about ready for sprinkler installation. We are getting a quote tomorrow. :) Love being out in the evenings this time of year. 54 deg and a light breeze....Sounds like Colorado is coming back to life. We live near I-70 and it was eerily quiet for a while, but tonight the constant wave of traffic noise is back. ... And, yes, that is Chuckles you see on the broken hose house. He helped with my WineShop meeting tonight.

It's been a slow go. I told my hubby that the last time I took on a project this ambitious, I was 30. .... and, um, I am not 30 any more. ;) This is garden area 1 of 3 that is planned for this year. I am about halfway done removing sod. The roots, oy vey. If only there weren't so many roots. But it has been lovely weather for working outside.

Great news! The rabbit is out of the window well and no worse for wear. I came downstairs to get my headset so I could call my brother back. Much to my surprise, the rabbit had gotten between the board and the closed window. I raced to the window, opened it and tried to grab him. Mike heard the noise and joined me, only to realize he wasn't the only one. "Cat!" he said. "What?" "Cat!" And I closed the window. Ziggy grumped off flicking her tail like, "Well, I can tell when I am not wanted.... " We reopened the window, I grabbed the rabbit and guided him into the sheet Mike was holding. He wrapped up the rabbit in his arms and carried it outside. Once on the front porch, zooooom!! The rabbit made a run for the spruce tree. We used the ramp rocks to fill in the hole.

Well, I said last year I was going to get new window well covers, and a week becomes a month becomes groaning about the price, becomes next year. So, Chuckles and I are working from the basement today. Yes, I am wearing my jacket. Today is day 3 of an adolescent bunny being stuck in the window well. By the muddy footprints on the window, his leap is inches shy of getting out. Giving him things to elevate his leap didn't work. Live trap with food in it didn't work. He is convinced the only way out is to come into the house. Maybe he has heard tales of how spoiled my animals always are! ;) Anyway, sure, I will play along. Window is open, bucket with food is on the table with a lid nearby, sheet is present so I can try to catch him, Ziggy is locked upstairs, and part of the basement is blocked off in case I miss. Now, we wait

Happy news! In 2015, Mike and I started working with Mines on a small scholarship fund for graduate students who needed help with unexpected expenses. The fund just made its first award! They gave it to a graduate student who just had surgery and needed help with medical expenses. :) Glad to meet with Gretchen (from the Mines Fund office) this afternoon and hear about the selection process and the award!

Rejected - this vanilla butternut squash flavor may be all the rage with other cats, but not for Ziggy. She won't get anywhere near it. I have contacted her vet to see if we can reorder her bronchitis medication in a chicken flavor, because I am not going to torture her for 10 weeks with something she clearly hates. We'll see....

Progress was made! The whole front garden is full of overgrown junipers, which have proved a happy habitat for small rodents, like our current vole resident, and very large spiders. To fight the vole one must become the vole? Perhaps. I seem to be making tracks in the junipers that look a lot like what the vole did to the front lawn :) My near-term plan is to separate the junipers back into individual plants. Long-term, I would prefer to replace them (but if you think trimming large junipers is hard work, go ahead and try to remove them.....)

Today was a big day! I submitted my first govt contract proposal under my own company. It's a super long shot, but going through the process and all the hemming, hawing, and hand wringing was key. I also had my first paid speaker gig in Fort Collins! Many thanks to Selene at Advanced Energy for organizing it as well as to RUAG for being so supportive of my business and approving flex time for this. :)

So, the test begins. This is the cat puzzle feeder our vet recommended for Ziggy. Ziggy had her first vet appointment (under my watch) today. She did very well. Lots of hissing and growling, but no issues. Her vet has challenged her to lose 3 pounds and get back to being a 12 pound cat by this time next year. So, the vet lost access to her chair, because Ziggy was like "I can't believe what I'm hearing"

Great AIAA event tonight! Fun to be back on the Boulder campus and see some of my Ball peeps, talk with AIAA members and hear about IXPE! I have a strong belief in the extra qualities polarization bring to imagery data, and mixing polarized x-ray imagery with a search to prove out some aspects of QED (Quantum Electrodynamics) sounds like an awesome space mission to me!

Day 4 of any cold is always the most terrifying for people around me. ;) It's just my asthma that makes me sound like I'm dying when I cough - I swear. :) Mike was joking as I put on my jacket - "putting yourself out on an ice float?" I said "No, just getting the trash can." Glad to be home from work today - hopefully, I won't scare my coworkers when I am at work tomorrow! Last May, I started on a path towards starting my own business. RUAG is a big part of that plan - they are a wonderfully flexible company who is willing to let me do consulting on the side. I have my first paying contract in February, I incorporated the LLC on Jan 2, and now I have business cards! :) Many thanks go to my hubby for both the business name and the logo! This will be the week of the web site update, after which I plan to more formally roll it out.

Sometimes, the eBay AI doesn't quite work right. I posted 21 Marway power supplies for sale on eBay for work a few days ago. Today, eBay sent me a coupon for $5 off the purchase of a Marway power supply... leaving me like "um, thanks but I already have plenty."

Mike joked that I am a show-off, doing things like working out as if it wasn't going to kill me. ;) He is feeling a little better today, but is still not quite up to normal activity. (as evidenced by the fact he turned down a steak dinner from his sister yesterday..... :>O ). But he is getting ready for class tomorrow. Ziggy and I are in the living room while I stretch. Love the light this time of day. :)

The Monet exhibit at the Denver Art Museum was great! Monet made paintings like I take pictures - there are never enough! We didn't realize he made over 300 paintings of the garden at his last residence (plus decades of other paintings) . Speaking of pictures...

Definitely something different! Tonight, I met Kari Trullinger and her boyfriend, Mike, for drinks at Jose O'sheas - a good time had by all! Great to hang out and catch up. Sadly, my Mike was too sick to make it. Keeping my fingers crossed that he sleeps better tonight.

This month's wine club shipment is here! The royal mama wines are both sweet, there's a McKenna Sauvignon Blanc, and a McKenna trilogy, which is comprised of two Cabernets - one from Napa and one from Lake County, California, as well as a Zinfandel.
