Ziggy said I left out the part of the day that was not quiet. She had a surprise visitor in the back yard today! The brave kitten came to the back yard! Ziggy was surprised to see him on the fence and loudly snorted at him. The kitten was like "???". I brought her inside and he followed. After a while, everyone calmed down and we spent some time quietly observing each other through the glass.

Crazy winds today. Heard about the devastation from the fires to the north of us... 😞 Hopefully, the wind will slow down soon so they can get them under control. In the meantime, we have had a quiet day. Mike got the draft for his report sent out, I did the finances and researched cheaper VOIP options, Mike has been repairing the snowman, and I started the 3rd puzzle of puzzle season. Parts of this one are so pink that it is almost hard to look at.

The brave kitten came by this morning. He is not Ziggy's favorite, but she still wants to be friends, at least enough to say, "Tell your brother to come by." The shy kitten I thought was a sister is actually a brother, and he is Ziggy's favorite. Quiet and mysterious and usually comes by between 11 pm and midnight. He also comes by closer to 2 am, but she has been advised that she has a curfew and can't meet her boyfriend at that hour. πŸ˜‰

Other than a little bit of rain on Christmas Eve, it has been so warm and dry. Bah humbug? Taking down the zoo and getting some watering done. 3 zoo members left. The house looks like a zoo refuge 😁

Goofiness... The garland is battery powered and has its own timer. Whatever time I turned it on the first time, it comes on at that time every day and auto shuts off after 5 hours. So, you can see the pattern of how I was fussing with it. ☺️

Ornaments as gifts:
Moory Christmas from my grandma Eleanor, because she knew Mike liked cows
1997 ornament from my dad's mom commemorating when we started planning our wedding. She also gave us the 1998 wedding bell
The windmill and ball from Holland were souvenir gifts from our neighbors at the old house, Todd and Maggie. I had watched their dog, Zeke, while they were away.
Heavy metal hedgehogs from Hailey
Reindeer from my great aunt Mary
Cat and hamster from Eleanor
Paper heart from our neighbors at the old house, Skip and Liz.
Eskimo from Mike's parents

More about ornaments... This scarecrow snowman thing is actually a favorite from when I was a kid. I assume someone we know made it. It always seemed like a splash of creepy avant garde art among the other stuff my mom had. The other fave speaks for itself....forever the quiet justified troublemaker. πŸ˜‰

The tree decorating is done! Back to the ornaments.... The little hand is from .t nephew, Gabriel, and the tree was made by he and his sister, Lydia. The blue ornament was made by Clara and the paper ornament with text about giving away his mom's food (?) was made by our friends' son, Daniel.

Annual fancy chicken health check complete.
Ages ago, we did an ornament exchange for Christmas Eve. Rob brought a fancy chicken. I drew the fancy chicken. No one would trade with me. I took the fancy chicken home. Completely by accident, the fancy chicken soon met its demise. Rob got me a new fancy chicken and required annual confirmation of his continued good health. πŸ˜‰πŸ”

Yesterday was the start of tree decorating (it's a complex process) Per tradition, I put on Handel's Overture to the Messiah....the whole thing, not just the Hallelujah Chorus. Once upon a time on Long Island, I used to play oboe for these pieces in a community orchestra for our Christmas show, also played oboe for it while at Suffolk Community College.

The plain colored balls go inside the tree to reflect the lights (my three dimensional tree concept). The other decorations have stories to tell...
The little blue ball was Mike's Grandma Nicholls. We got her tree when she moved in with his parents and it was still attached. πŸ€—

The leaf is from Emerald Lake, Canada... From a trip to celebrate his graduation

The 3 Ukrainian balls are from my dad's mom

The 1995 ball was the start of our annual ornament collection

Kokopelli was a souvenir from when my parents went to the Grand Canyon

The Golden High School ornament commemorates the version of Golden High School my hubby went to, before it was torn down and replaced

Pikes Peak is from our trip there, as well as The Broadmoor, for our 13th anniversary

The antenna is from our VIP tour of the NRAO's VLA (National Radio Astronomy Observatory Very Large Array) where I gave a presentation that became the basis of my first book. The VLA was featured in scenes with Jody Foster in the movie, "Contact"

And the 1999 stamp ornament was from a very busy year that left us feeling like we were living in the list office, so it just had to be the annual ornament

The lights are on the tree! I traded out some of the old incandescent strings for LEDs, but the string from 1995 with all the cool combinations of chasing/twinkling/slow glow is still in the middle. I know the expression is "a thousand points of light" but I kept track this year, and thus actually adds up to 1600. πŸ€—πŸ’•πŸŽ„

While Black Friday historically denotes the point in the year when the stores turn a profit (books go from red to black), for Ziggy, it meant the day she finally spent time face to face with one of the kittens (they are kittens to me, even though they are a year old now). The meeting was through the glass of our front door, and Ziggy gave the kitten the wheezing of a lifetime. She didn't hiss, she didn't growl, but she loafed by the door and wheezed loudly for the whole time. I guess that means it went ok?

Of everyone I know, I probably love spiders the most. But there are definite limits to that love, and a dream I had last night found one of them. I dreamt I was in an office building for a meeting / telecon in a large conference room. After a robust discussion on crypto keys, I decided to sit down by a table on the side for a moment. There was a small spider running around that was one of those super quick jumping spiders. As I watched it, I noticed it had these long light antennae that kind of wave around while it was running. Like two out of control eyebrows. It jumped to the chair next to me. Wave, wave, wave. And then it jumped on my shoe, and then it turn out those things were wings! It unfolded them, and flew onto my hair. I jumped up exclaiming "Oh, Jesus!" as I tried to figure out where it went. </end dream> I googled flying spiders after I woke up just to check .....

She looked relieved and got up immediately afterwards. Ziggy says the labor shortage affects everyone. It's hard to find a good publicist.

4 hours of mulching today...the pile is smaller, but alas, not gone. Tomorrow... Mike also finished connecting the new Zone 7 to the loop - it works! I did get the only tarp not harmed in yesterday's incident into the shed, and all but 2 of the garden stepping stones I was using to hold the tarps have been safely returned to the garden.

Our 28th date-versary celebration was fantastic! We used some gift cards from Terry and Gwenn Sanders to the Fresca restaurant in Boulder. Excellent dinner, excellent wine, and Groot? 28 years ago tonight, Mike and I had our first date at the T-Wa inn. πŸ€— I don't have any pictures but they would have been cute! We accidentally wore the same outfit - black shoes, black jeans, purple shirt, brown leather jacket. But was it an accident? We have been having to coordinate outfits ever since so we don't match! Here's a picture by my parents' house on Long Island in 1994.

Ow. Owie ow ow. Whose stupid idea was it to spend 9 hours doing mulch this weekend? Mine of course. Beautiful day...and I saw a hawk up close! And then he circled off into the sun. Last push to wrap up all the yard work. Just over half the mulch is done. Lots of weeding I had been putting off got done, too. Zone 7 is next on the agenda tomorrow.

Had a lovely get-together for the patio grand opening party...many thanks to Rannae, Val, Gwenn, Bella, Sarah, Auntie Linda, and my hubby for making the evening special! Ironically, it was chilly and windy enough that we admired the patio from closer to the house. Mike and I did spend time on the patio later at night, and saw a lovely meteor that went from east to west across the sky. πŸ€— After that, the air was filled with the scent of burnt toast, then bacon. We never found the source... Maybe a shift in wind pattern by the Denny's near I-70? It took a little convincing for me to pass inspection with Ziggy. Finally, it was ascertained that I was not hiding bacon and I was allowed back inside.

Done. Finished. It's always a strange feeling. In April 2020, I started my pandemic project by tearing out some grass. To my hubby's dismay, there wasn't too much of a plan - just some notional handwaving of what might go where and some babbling about a bridge. I removed the grass in the north yard and replaced it with gardens and a pathway. I removed half the grass from the front yard and did the same. I removed a section of grass from by the garage and put in a garden. I removed the grass from the east side of the yard and put in the flagstone walkway with the bridge and a small sitting area. And some of you may remember Ziggy's stump in the back yard....with the whole area regraded and converted to a flagstone patio. Taking a victory lap tomorrow with a small family party. πŸ€— All that will be left is to finish fixing Zone 7 (that's scope creep - doesn't count as part of the original project), refresh some mulch, and update the water proofing on the goddess statue. Before we know it, it'll be puzzle season. πŸ˜‰

Woke up to find this video on the ring camera. First, I would like to commend Ring on apparently making a very boop-able camera. There isn't a creature who has seen it who didn't feel the urge to boop it. We think it's the arrangement of the little red lights? Second, I am very glad we put in all the effort to seal up all the old rat spaces in the back yard from when we had rats a couple of years ago. But then, aaaargh! Not what I wanted to see.

Took a break from work yesterday afternoon and taking another one today to do some fall planting. (When I decided to do fall planting, I forgot that it is usually dark outside by the time I finish my meetings!) Got the sprinkler sprayers I needed to add in Zone 6 (by the driveway) as well as the plants there installed and settled yesterday. Working on Zone 5 (front garden) now. The plant with the shade is going to be transplanted to Zone 4 ( North garden), where it will get the shade it needs. Hoping to finish Zones 5 and 4 today before the rainy weather starts. The new plants will like the cool cloudy rainy conditions to give them some time to adjust. πŸ€—

Fantastic business trip to Colorado Springs! Many thanks to PTAC for hosting the small business event - definitely got some leads on potential contracts! πŸ€— .... I had not yet been to the Catalyst Campus - it's a beautiful building that was once a train station.

Monday cuteness. Ziggy's advice is to eat your vegetables, stretch, and when your coworker has lots of telecons, go back to bed....and encourage them to do the same.

Fun to be back at the Cat Care Society fundraiser, "Tails of Painted Cats" on Saturday! We sponsored 2 of the cats, and one of them came home with us! Mike was very excited to win that auction because the cat was painted by his favorite local artist. πŸ€— We also got a painting and gifts for our nieces in the silent auction. Hoping the event raised the needed funds!!! Oh, and the last video e the trouble I was in when I got home. 😾

Pause... Sigh ... Remember. Growing up on Long Island, the twin towers were my favorite part of the New York City skyline. (Many people don't realize they also had our comms on top, and I have always had a zeal for infrastructure, so to me those antennas were their most notable feature) I don't have any pictures of that, so you are getting one if my dad's favorite pictures instead. I know many of you have heard my September 11 story of working on a proposal in my concrete bunker in Los Angeles with no idea what was happening outside. But the more important thing I remember about that day is it was a day where moments mattered. All the last phone calls, the wishes for last phone calls, and all the stories of people who somehow barely missed being in the wrong place at the wrong time. On this 20th anniversary, if you do nothing else, please hold it in your heart how moments matter. πŸ˜’β€οΈπŸ™

Tales from the loop Episode 4 - Season Finale: Found one more collocation of water and electrical lines for good measure, and then I found the T where the garden ties into the loop by the rose bush. I may be a bedraggled mess, but I am a bedraggled mess who is done digging up Zone 7! We're still contemplating next steps.

A unexpected adventure.... I called Pioneer to see if they had gotten any more of the flagstone in. Knowing I have been waiting since May, the guy decided to check all the stores and found 15 pieces in Colorado Springs. I brought 7 home today. (Almost 4 hours round trip) Will try to pick up some more next weekend.

So, the kittens belong to a neighbor, and the situation is complicated. The brave kitten was back 2 nights ago, heard Ziggy and I playing with a jingle bell ball, and was absolutely desperate to get inside (video). I hadn't been watching my phone and didn't realize he was there. So, last night, I did keep an ear out for notifications, and he showed up around 12:50 am. I spent about an hour with him. I was sitting on the front step and he was all over me and purring. He also met Ziggy through the glass of the front door. That went better than expected. She was very sweet about it. She would come nose up against the glass, he would get up to the glass, take 2 steps back and hiss at her. Then, she would sit back away from the glass, letting him come back to look in. After a little bit, she would come back to the glass. And repeat. Really good for a first meeting of cats. 🐱

Tales from the loop, Episode 3: I needed a break from work this evening, so I decided to continue following the sprinkler hose. It went around the juniper, under the juniper, and finally towards the house. Done for the day, but all signs point to me finding the loop...after I dig through a bunch of rock by the rose bush. Once again, I had a rabbit supervisor. πŸ€—

I have named this project "Tales from the Loop" after a TV series I found to have equally slow and uninteresting plot development. But my story is moving faster. In Episode 1, I started digging up zone 7 and found the staples. In Episode 2, I continued my quest to find how Zone 7 ties into the sprinkler loop that goes all the way around the house so we can cap it and install new sprinklers and pipe for the Zone 7 plants. Still no sign of the loop, but I must be getting closer. I also found a second instance of interwoven electrical and sprinkler lines. It's always a good idea to collocate your electrical lines with water lines... said nobody ever. πŸ™„ Well, I guess one person - the same person who said you should impale sprinkler hoses to hold them in place.

Dear Sprinkler Zone 7, Sorry - your services are no longer needed and we will be filling your position. The first time I found a lawn staple in the middle of the sprinkler line, I thought, "Weird!" The second time made me say "hmmm" The fifth time made me say "Omg, someone actually thought you secure the hose to the ground by driving staples through it." About half of the zone is dug up now. Mike will install new lines after I get it all dug up.

I am getting the "Worst Cat Person Ever" award this morning. Ziggy is 8 hours into a 12 hour fast for blood work to check her pancreas. What I have learned is that food allergies in cats can cause chronic GI inflammation that can lead to pancreatitis. I told her she will get a big lunch when we get home, but right now.... I know fasting is hard. 😿

Ziggy's nutrition appointment went well. The vet at the CSU Hospital also thinks she has a food allergy - not just the ear infections but her food aversion behaviors. She said those usually develop when food upsets the GI system because animals become wary of the discomfort it causes. We are going to try some prescription high protein allergen free food but keep an eye on her kidneys and make adjustments as needed. *fingers crossed*

I have wonderful news! I took a wander this morning to expand my search area. I was able to locate the old cat's owner a couple of blocks away. The cat's name is Ernie. He is 15 and has cancer as well as thyroid issues. He is on thyroid medication as well as steroids for his cancer. While he goes to his home 4 times a day, he refused to stay indoors. His family had no idea he was wandering so far, especially in his condition. But he did help find the 2 stray black kittens. In my wandering, I was able to confirm they are stray and have been in the yard of the house across the street for a month. So, still working on how to get them inside. Here is Ernie with the brave kitten at 6 am this morning.

So, I have confirmed that I now have 2 stray black kittens. I estimate them to be 3-4 months old. I was able to interact with them at about a 10 foot distance last night, and then they spent from 12:35 am - 3 am running around on the front step. Hoping they will be easier to catch.

Well, shoot. I now have a second cat on the front step. That was inevitable. It was hungry, and literally sat for 7 minutes on camera eating all the food at 2:55 am. I was up shortly after that and was trying to figure out if the video was off or that was a second cat when the stray cat came by at 3:20 am. Sorry, little buddy.
Aug 12, 2021 7:27:02 am
*sigh* I succeeded in making the stray cat sad last night. It was not comfortable going all the way into the trap, but did eat some of the food trail to entice it. New plan is to go slower. I still want it coming by to eat. It did come by 3 times.

After our interactions at 3:15 am, I was sure I had messed it all up and scared the cat off. But as Ziggy and I were having a little bit to eat at 5:30 am, someone else was coming around for breakfast. πŸ€— That included nonchalantly checking out the cat carrier I had left on the front step. Pretty confident I can get it in the trap now. The fluffy towel with the catnip is a huge draw.

Stray cat project, part 2. We decided to set out the things we plan to lure it into the trap with. The fox did not come by tonight. Fancy Feast and catnip were of interest at 3:15 am, so we should be in business. I was up when the cat came by. After it settled in the blanket, we made eye contact through the window. It didn't run, definitely domesticated. It is very petite and old. I was able to sit about 6 feet away from it in the neighbors' driveway and have a conversation. Such sad meows. 😿 This is the second time I have interacted with it and it has run back towards a particular neighbors' house, so I will ask them about it tomorrow.

To catch a stray cat... A few days ago, a stray cat appeared at our front door. He ran away as soon as I opened it, and as he did so, I could see he was so thin that his hip bones were showing. So, I have been trying to lure him back. Something has been eating the food I put out. To verify I am not going to borrow a trap from the Cat Care Society just to catch a skunk, my brother gave me his ring camera. All set up and awaiting news from the front step. And yes, of course Chuckles helped with camera setup. *Fingers crossed*

Thank you for all the good wishes on my recovery! Having a quiet day today - long zoom call for training on the Solumina software my consulting client is getting installed. I am part of the training, because I will be helping from a project management perspective. Am having flashbacks to prior manufacturing efforts and how helpful this software would have been. Any how, I was occasionally on video and thought, "I look way better than I feel!" So, I took a picture to prove it. πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„ Ok, maybe the picture and the feeling match. So, I took a second picture.

Weekend trip! We took a road trip to New Mexico with Mike's aunt to complete a trip she had planned to take with her mom, who passed away this Easter. We started our in Los Alamos to see friends from Mines. Then, we drove to the Valle Caldera, Jemez Springs, and into Albuquerque. In Albuquerque, we went to the Museum of Nuclear Science as well as the Isotopes game.... Ish. It was rained out! For the drought in Albuquerque, you're welcome.πŸ˜‰ We are happy to have driven all that way for a baseball game if that's what it took to bring much needed rain. The storm caused a power outage at our hotel, so we spent a but of time driving around Albuquerque's downtown area. The trip home on Sunday was pretty uneventful, except for I-25 closure in Colorado Springs for a fatal accident. Many thanks to our neighbors for looking after Ziggy, who blamed Mike for our absence.

Here's Ziggy, taking an active role in her medical care.... Or trying to see how to cancel her appointment. She frequently makes appointments for me on my laptop so yes, my cat can use Outlook. We went to a different vet today to see if she had any other thoughts on Ziggy's weight issues. Between that, her dandruff, and her persistent ear infections, she thought maybe there was a food allergy involved. Worth a try - got Ziggy some different food tonight.

Returned home last night (or, more specifically 1:30 am this morning thanks to flight delays) from the first business travel I have done since I went to Sweden in October 2019. Ziggy constantly reminded Mike that he is not me, but otherwise my pandemic cat did ok in my absence. Northern California was ok, travel was tough with flight delays coming and going. The airports were definitely short of staff. It was interesting to see all the people who have just been little zoom heads in person!

Happy 23rd anniversary to my hubby! Every year, I have been trying to scan one more picture. This morning, I scanned 16... I told Mike I needed to pick up the pace! There are dozens left to scan... Here are the new ones. There are more on the web site: http://mksanders.com/1998pics/wedding.html

Lovely day for lunch with my hubby. Based on our experience in Riverside, California.... we're pretty sure In-n-Out is always supposed to be eaten outside when it's nearly 100 degrees out. πŸ˜‰ Literally, it was a dry heat and we were quite comfortable in the shade.

For local folks, our cousin, Ginger, has two bonded kittens she is trying to re-home. She is willing to have them spayed, if that would help. They were planned as barn cats, but they are snuggly and prefer to be indoors.

I am almost at the end of a journey that started in April 2020. I feel as worn out as my boots and gloves, but as my hubby would say, "happiness dwells within me" 😴 I need about 9 more flagstone blocks to finish the walkway, but they are out of stock again. πŸ™„

I have now moved all 134 flagstone that were delivered out of the street. The stones are all placed in the patio area. The little patio for the hammock is also complete. I brought the last empty pallet back to Pioneer and picked up another 300 pounds of the patio base (sand/gravel mixture called "breeze"). It has been double tarped during this afternoon's rain storm with the hope of wrapping up the patio tomorrow. My little Ziggle helped with the "almost done" victory party photo shoot. 😺 Pictures include the storm clouds as seen from Pioneer Sand in Golden. I was just barely able to get the truck loaded before the rain moved in. πŸ€—

My 2 trophies, sitting in the driveway. The 3 pallets of stone are enough for the patio and part of the walkway. Yesterday, I took a break from working on the patio....and worked on the walkway. πŸ˜‰ The final configuration of the stones will likely look different, but they are stable and usable. In the spirit of some of the landscaping projects from years past, that may eventually make that their final configuration. 😁

My little munchkin has separation anxiety. I went to the office for a few hours and my hubby said she spent the entire time where my laptop had been. Not surprising - when you adopt a senior cat, you don't know what their prior life was like. When you adopt a senior cat and then do full time WFH due to a pandemic.... *Sigh* We will work on this slowly.

Ziggy is making new plans for the morning. Indoor plans. We went outside, and she decided to walk to the gate to do a rabbit check. She wasn't the only one doing a rabbit check. When she was about 10 feet from the gate, the hawk landed on it. She sat down and looked at him. He looked at her. I said, "Oh!" He looked at me and flew off. Ziggy walked to the gate and looked under it. I said, "Honey, there's no rabbits out here if the hawk is around." She walked to the back door and we came back inside.

Well, here we are - when I said I was hoping to drink some wine by a fire for my birthday, I was thinking of a lovely summery night under the stars. But, it's cold and rainy, the heat is running, and so we are tucked in by the gas fireplace. πŸ€—πŸ˜Ί Being in my big comfy chair with my feet up works. ☺️Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes! 4 days of celebrations wrapped up nicely with a happy hour with my hubby, parents, and brother. Some times, all the loose ends tie together. My contacts in the state Office of Economic Development referred me to a small local space company who was seeking a CEO to lead them through commercialization of their R&D product. Paperwork is all finalized this evening. Formal announcement and details coming in a couple of weeks. This is a "don't quit your day job" sort of thing - no salary at this stage. So, it will be my new hobby for the summer after I finish the patio. Grateful and excited for this opportunity! πŸ€—

The bees are happy that the allium bloomed. The new clematis in the back yard also bloomed. I know all this because I have been doing a spacing check before setting the first row of flagstone. D'oh! So close. But scooching to span just under 4 inches across 10 flagstone should be do-able. And that's today's lesson on layout checks. πŸ˜‰

Inspector Ziggy says, "This is not where these tools go. "

Almost done sorting out my muddy mess. The monsoon had been beneficial. For leveling, I had removed 3-4 inches of dirt from the south end and added it to the north side. The clay didn't compact right. It finally did compact when I walked over it after our monsoon rain, so now I am adding another 1-2 inches to the north side to relevel it. Patio base will be getting added soon!

Long day. I ordered 1.5 tons of top soil and 4 yards of mulch last week. Their delivery on Monday summoned a mighty storm! Colorado residents owe me thanks for the drought-busting storm . πŸ˜‰ *Sigh* Mulch and dirt everywhere. So, I spent yesterday evening and a little over 8 hours today getting it all moved to where it is supposed to be. Thanks go to my hubby and his dad for getting the rest of the mess out of the street. It was muddy and miserable, but it's done. 2.25 tons of patio base was delivered today. That pile is double tarped.

The great patio leveling project is almost complete - one spot in the middle and one along the edge remain. Dirt and mulch for the planters along the fence arrives Monday morning. 2 tons of patio base arrives Wednesday morning. Test fence is up! While I hate to have to fence in my flowers, any that have been exposed have been voraciously eaten to ground level. So, I bought black rabbit fencing with the hope it is not as visible and I am putting it around a larger area. I really like the pale yellow tulips and the grape hyacinths out front.... I had an audience so the change has been noted. Hope I still have flowers in the morning!

Ziggy cautiously emerges....form building is done for the day. They will be back tomorrow at 8 am to finish the forms and rebar. Concrete delivery is at 10 am. After that, I can start getting the new patio installed! I don't know if it will be better than Ziggy's stump, but it will be rollable.

Ziggy had a lovely birthday with oven roasted chicken for dinner and new crinkle paper! She also employed a new strategy. The squirrel has been timing how to get from the tree to the fence when she is sitting in the walkway. So, today she positioned herself between the tree and the fence, successfully keeping the squirrel in the tree for 2 hours. free that, she got bored and came inside for lunch.

I took Old Blue to the dump this morning in order to get rid of the dirt and sod before it rains this week. Tonight, Mike and I planned out one last bit of tree planting prep - where to take dirt from in order to fill in the stump hole.

Progress on the back yard continues and the tulips are blooming. πŸ€— Tree planting (the 3 yellow flags in the back) is now scheduled for Wednesday morning. The associated sprinkler work was done Saturday morning. I am doing some prep work for elevation measurements on the back patio area. The plan is to build garden planters along the fence, and use them to help raise the level of the yard in that area. That will enable us to have a single level of flagstone patio instead of having to split it. Right now, I am pulling out the chips from the stump (not stable enough for the patio) and then I will smooth everything out a bit so we can get the planter height requirements. That will help us determine what kind of materials we can use for the planter. Old blue is almost loaded for the next dump run.

Great for SpaceX, but a big big contract loss for a lot of people I know and care about. πŸ˜” To cheer me up, I got to see deer, robbins, and a cat butt. It's a cat thing - "sad? Have a cat butt." This has been the most our generator has run in years! As my brother was headed to our house for dinner tonight, he was passed by cop vers and out power went out. Turns out there was a terrible accident on the road that goes by our house -a truck in the ditch and a car took out a power pole. Luckily, I wasn't cooking! So, we still had a nice pizza dinner with my brother. 2 hours later, they finally finished the accident assessment, cleared the vehicles, and allowed the power company to start work on the downed pole. No estimate on when they will finish, but we see the flashing lights, so we know they are trying. The generator is powering the fridge, a light, and the device chargers. Luckily, today was warm so we are not yet worried about the heat.

Sooo tired. The first rounds of landscaping are always the hardest. Dump load #2 is in the truck. Sprinkler / tree planting prep is done. And I gave my tulips, crocus and hyacinths um .... I told them they were rabbit-free gated communities, not jail. I am hoping that the rabbits will lose interest once the grass greens up and the plants are taller. I have never had so many problems with rabbits eating tulip plants to the ground. I am blaming the snow storm for making them so hungry!

Snow - Sunday morning edition. Since I was up on and off all morning, I can tell you with certainty that the storm finally rolled in around 6:30 am MDT. One of those spring snows - so much water content that it is right on the border between snow and slush. So far, we have 4.5-5 inches of it, depending upon where I measure. Current forecast is for another few inches before the storm leaves later today. Under Ziggy's surveillance, I cleared it off of trees and bushes, shoveled part of the back patio and then half the walk out front. My hands were cold, so I came in. More to do later. Under Ziggy's watchful eye, I shook the snow that had cakes onto my jacket and hair off in the basement shower. Now, we are settled upstairs.

28 years ago, I met my hubby on the campus tour for the Colorado School of Mines. I had asked my tour guide, Shannon, for detailed information about the labs in the physics department. She said, "Honestly, I stay as far away from that building as possible, but Mike can answer your questions." Here are some pictures from my photo album. My main notes seem to have been "It was windy." "It's so dry on the plains that you have to water the trees, and the grass goes crunch!" (As observed by someone from Long Island, where you spend your time desperately trying to stop things from growing.)

It's buffalo day! Mike said the timing makes it look like I am super worried about the incoming snow storm. πŸ˜‰ (In reality, it takes about 3 weeks for our butcher to age and prep half a buffalo.) The freezer is full. We should be good for a few years with the 394 pounds.... (It's wrapped to be good for about 3 years in the freezer.) And of course Mike had a fuzzy audience..... πŸ€—

As I watch the clouds slowly roll in, I decided to take a few pictures of recent flowers! Love the purple crocus. There is a new yellow crocus in the front, and the daffodils are coming up. Mental note, from a rabbit perspective, yellow crocus seem to be a delicacy. They haven't munched on the purple ones as much.

You know there's a project afoot when the laser level comes out! By digging up the yard to expose roots I want the grinder to catch I inadvertently went from "I'm not working on the patio this year" to "of course I am working on the patio this year". Ziggy came outside to get in on the laser level action. And yes, Mike came up with a plan on how to handle the very steep slope in the back yard.

Thank goodness for cool temperatures and wet soil. I am taking a couple of hours off today and tomorrow to finish stump grinding prep. They are ready to chase exposed surface roots, and there is no way I would be putting in a patio without that help. πŸ™€ And yes, that means a future dump run is in the works. Our neighbor will recycle the last 4 pieces of metal trim that I pulled out yesterday.

I always say that planting bulbs is an act of optimism. Doing this puzzle also seems to be an act of optimism. ;) 😁 Mike and I have been working on it together this week, making little bits of progress each day. And I had the extra bonus of getting to talk with a lot of people today - my uncle, my great aunt, my parents, my brother, Kari (yes, my friend who spells her name the same way I do!), Char, and Craig. πŸ€—

Today's mini- adventure in the back yard. We need to get the old boards pulled up for multiple reasons. But I have been having the worst trouble prying them free. Now that it's really muddy outside, I figured I could break them free of the dirt, since there are no nails, right? Luckily, I have a tall strong husband to help me. While it is true there were no nails, the undersides of the boards were anchored into the ground with rebar. πŸ™€ 1 board removed. 1 to do some other day.

Been busy planning. The hardest part about landscaping projects is double checking you are sure, certain, really sure, super sure....before digging up the yard. So, I spent some time with 3 poles, some green string and blue flags visualizing what 3 skyrocket juniper trees, the remaining garden area, and the outline of the patio would look like. I'll get better pictures once the lighting is more even. I plan to leave this in place awhile to see if it feels right.

No more perogies at home for me. I started my first grease fire tonight. (Not my first uncontrolled indoor fire, but that's a story my quantum mechanics notebook will never forget... And no, I wasn't trying to burn my beloved notebook from literally my favorite school subject.) I think it was for Christmas 2019 that Jarl and Christy gave me frozen chili relleno perogies. There were a couple left in the freezer and I decided tonight was the night. Having previously discovered they were not that great boiled, I fried them. They were almost done, and some grease hopped out of the pan. As it pooled around the edge of the burner, a little wall of flame lept to life. With everything I had ever been told about baking soda and whatnot for grease fires, I blew on it. Yes, like a birthday cake. It worked. I still contend I have a very busy guardian angel, and the past 45 years have not been easy on him. I believe he has tried to trade the assignment, but there were no takers. πŸ˜‰ And if he could speak with me at the moment, I believe the message would have been, "That was your plan?!?" Anyhow, all's well that ends well.

Every year, I make New Year's resolutions. Sure, they usually peter out around August, but it's better than nothing. πŸ€— This year's resolutions were "fix your foot" (done? Seems better.) and "get your a** in gear" (a statement targeted at my writing and my business) It's the little milestones that stick with you sometimes. Tonight, I set up inventory for my 4 books in my company QuickBooks. They're not just books - they are inventoried products now. πŸ™€

It plays! Thanks to Bella's dad, Bobby G, for being brave enough to try to play a paper record my grandpa Bill recorded while on active duty. It plays!!!! Next step is to try to digitize it so we can get rid of the noise.

Happy Friday! After a rough week of defiant chickadees and cloudy weather, Ziggy's Friday morning rounds ended with 2 doves and an angry squirrel in a tree. It's going to be a good day!

Ziggy and the defiant chickadee. She was absolutely incensed that he would not only sit at the bird feeder while she chattered at him from her perch by the shed, but he chirped no "dees". Chickadees chirp different number of "dees" based on threat level. So "chicka-dee-dee-dee-dee" is a higher threat level than "chicka-dee-dee". This defiant chickadee looked at Ziggy and said "chicka chicka".... No dees. I told her, "honey, I think he knows there is no way you plan to jump up there."

This foot got a good review! πŸ˜„ The podiatrist said this afternoon that it looks like a pinched nerve and no actual damage. The anti-inflammatory pills seem to have really helped over the past 2 weeks, so we are going to try stopping them today. If the nerve flares back up, there's a shot for that, which she can give me next week. So, I guess this foot is also on notice.....
